1/ What is the measurement range of the SDM-72?
The SDM-72 measures steel dust concentration in grease from 0.000 % to 5.000 % by weight.
2/ What resolution does it offer?
It provides a minimum resolution of 0.001 % (Wt), allowing you to detect very small increases in iron particles.
3/ How does the SDM-72 work?
The meter uses a magnetic-balance electromagnetic induction method. When grease containing iron particles enters the sensing coil, the change in magnetic properties induces a voltage proportional to the steel dust concentration, displayed within 3 seconds.
4/ What sample volume is required?
Each measurement requires approximately 0.8 mL of grease held in the supplied porcelain sampling tube.
5/ What power source and battery life does it have?
It runs on four AA alkaline batteries, delivering up to 30 hours of continuous operation at 25 °C.
6/ What is the acceptable operating temperature range?
The device operates reliably between 0 °C and 40 °C, making it suitable for both workshop and field use.
7/ Which accessories come standard with the SDM-72?
Four AA alkaline batteries (for testing)
Ten porcelain sampling tubes plus a sampling spatula
Protective carrying case with impact and moisture resistance
Bilingual user manual.
8/ How do I perform a measurement?
Fill the porcelain tube with ~0.8 mL of grease.
Insert it into the meter’s sample chamber and close the lid.
Turn the selector to “MEAS” and press the button.
Read the concentration on the LCD after ~3 seconds (auto-zeroing before each test).
9/ What routine maintenance is required?
Clean the sampling chamber and tubes after each oil-immersion test. Replace batteries when the “Lo Bat” icon appears. Every 6 months, check calibration against a reference standard or send to an authorized service center.
10/ What should I do if the meter displays an error or unstable readings?
Verify correct battery installation and sufficient charge. Ensure the sampling tube and chamber are free of debris or residual grease. Restart the meter and retry the auto-zero procedure. – Contact your local distributor or New Cosmos service for sensor/board inspection.
